A dire situation for Malawi’s elderly population

The Lifeline Fund mainly focuses their work in Malawi on two main aspects:

• Providing clean, safe water for drinking and bathing, through the drilling of hundreds of new boreholes
• Caring for the many orphaned children in Malawi, by improving food supplies, education services and healthcare facilities

As valuable and life-saving as these projects are, there are still many more people in Malawi who desperately need their help. This is why the Lifeline Fund has started a new project, to help elderly people who have no family and no one to care for them.

Elderly people in Malawi are extremely vulnerable; there is no pension system to provide for them and many lose their relatives to AIDs and other epidemics. The current situation for the elderly is dire. They face many problems:

• Starvation is the biggest concern for elderly people, as they are not capable of growing their own crops any more due to the weakness of old age,
• Others suffer through cold nights with no blankets and in dwellings with leaky roofs.

Sadly, the Lifeline Fund has encountered these sorts of problems in around 700 elderly people in Malawi but they are working incredibly hard to address them. Watch this space for more details…
