With the President of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika, on a state visit to Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has taken the opportunity to make an uplifting announcement.
Malawi looks set to benefit from Merkel’s pledge that the European economic superpower will continue to support the African nation’s development.
Ahead of the summit between the European Union and the African Union (for which Malawi currently holds the presidency) Merkel announced that Germany that will sustain its efforts to offer development aid to Malawi.
Also acknowledging Malawi’s recent efforts, Merkel said:
“We want to help Malawi advance in the fight on poverty and reaching the Millennium Development Goals”.
President Bingu wa Mutharika’s visit saw a focus on co-operation between the two nations with hopes that the two could co-operate in public-private partnerships. Mutharika said there were good opportunities for investment in the transport sector, in the health sector and especially in the field of renewable energy.
In this spirit of mutuality and co-operation, the Malawian President also invited Angela Merkel to take the opportunity to visit Malawi whenever she got the chance, stating that he and his nation would support Germany’s bid to get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
