Glasgow City Council is this week sending a 17-strong humanitarian aid team to Malawi to build a new medical clinic for people who have lost limbs.
Working as part of the Lord Provost, Bob Winter’s Malawi Fund, the team is made up of staff from a number of organisations, including:
• Lord Provost & International Office
• Access LLP
• Glasgow Life
• City Building LLP
Championing the project is Olivia Giles – the former Evening Times Scotswoman of the Year – and her 500 Miles charity.
Once in Malawi, the team will spend sixteen days building a new orthotics and prosthetics clinic at Kamuzu Central Hospital, erecting the structure from a specially designed kit. Once completed, the new facility will help to make and fit prosthetic limbs for people who have lost their arms or legs. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that around 60,000 Malawians would benefit from this kind of service.
A statement from the Lord Provost read:
“This project is transforming lives.
“Our staff and those from City Building and Access, some of whom are returning to Malawi, are helping improve the opportunities and life chances of the entire population – young and old.”
