Six promising Malawians have been honoured with scholarships from the Republic of Ireland, as part of a new fellowship programme.

The Irish Ambassador Liam MacGabhann made the announcement this week, revealing that six Malawian students will be given the opportunity to complete their Master of Science degree courses at the University College Dublin and the University College Cork.

Mr MacGabhann believes that the new skills the students will learn during their overseas fellowship experience will help them to return to Malawi and make a meaningful contribution to their countries.

The candidates themselves are from Government departments, which means that they will be in a position to use their newfound knowledge to directly influence the way the country is run. Three students come from Malawi’s Ministry of Development, Planning and Cooperation, two work within the Office of the President and Cabinet, and one student is from the Ministry of Agriculture.

After announcing the news of the scholarships on Monday (30th August):, Mr MacGabhann said

“This is the second year that we have run the programme in Malawi. I am delighted that for the second consecutive year, we have six successful candidates.”
