Following the launch of a new initiative designed to help elderly and disabled people in some of the more rural and disadvantaged parts of Malawi, The Lifeline Fund is pleased to report they are making excellent progress.
Elderly and infirm people in Malawi are nearly as vulnerable as the thousands of orphaned children; if their families have been lost to AIDs or other diseases, there is no one to provide for them. Problems with limited mobility and strength mean that getting food and a safe, warm place to sleep becomes far more difficult for Malawi’s elderly and disabled population, especially in isolated areas.
To alleviate these problems, the Lifeline Fund launched a scheme called ‘The Mercy Run’, delivering food and other supplies to vulnerable people living in areas outside of villages.
John R. Searle, coordinator of the charitable organisation, recently visited an area where this initiative is running. He witnessed the distribution of the second batch of around 250 blankets to elderly and infirm Malawians, designed to keep the cold at bay as winter approaches. Speaking of the gesture, he said:
“[It was] little enough, but the gratitude on the beneficiaries’ faces almost moved me to tears.”
