In addition to all of their other projects in Malawi, the building of increasing numbers of day care centres for orphaned and need children is a top priority for the Lifeline Fund. In fact, they are currently building a new day care centre every six weeks, and in addition to new centres in Mwanza and Khombwe, the latest one is situated in Lisungwi.
The building of the Lisungwi day care centre
The need for a new day care centre in the Lisungwe River area became immediately obvious to the Lifeline Fund Coordinator, John R. Searle, after the rainy season left over 150 orphans cut off from the existing Lisungwi centre. Luckily, the chief of the neighbouring Funsani village volunteered a site, and an entirely new village has been built in the area.
At the new day care centre, similarly to all of the other Lifeline Fund projects, needy and orphaned children are cared for and provided with food and access to healthcare. The most important aspect of these day care centres however is the joy they bring to the lives of unhappy and suffering children. More than 100 orphans can now go to the Lisungwe centre to share games, books and toys and play with new friends, whilst also being fed nutritious meals and receiving daily school lessons.
Day care centres such as the one at Lisungwe are essential to helping children who have had to grow up prematurely in order to survive desperate circumstances to rediscover the joy and happiness of childhood.
